Big news: Two of my songs were selected for inclusion in [Trans]formation, a new stage production which “explores the naked truth of gender identity as a new devised theatre work. Designed and directed in the style of The Living Canvas, this world premiere co-production is devised from the works of and performed by transgender, genderqueer, and non-binary artists.

[Trans]formation opens in The Vault at Collaboraction Studios (1579 N. Milwaukee Ave.) on November 17 and runs through December 17th. Tickets start at $15 and are on sale at http://nothingwithoutacompany-thelivingcanvas-transformation.brownpapertickets.com/.”

Autumn Surprises…

Hey everyone!

I’m really happy to announce that a short story of mine was published by The James Franco Review today! This is the first time I’ve ever had a full-length story published anywhere — most of my published writing has been poetry and opinion pieces for various media, in addition to my music. I really hope you enjoy it! I’m especially proud to have been chosen by guest editor Ryka Aoki, one of the best writers of fiction out there right now. Read it for free at https://thejamesfrancoreview.com/2016/09/29/fiction-by-mya-byrne/.

Here’s what Ryka said about my story on the JFR site today. Totally humbled.

— Read Mya Byrne’s “Chain of Rocks,” and find neither a strident nor a self-deprecating account of injustice and economic poverty. Instead, witness Byrne evoking a rich, almost musical narrative that finds an improbable abundance within itself—in its own fiber, its own need and emerging fertility. — Ryka Aoki

Falcon Ridge, Philly Folk, and Rockwood Aug 16!

Hi everyone! I’m glad to be back in my hometown for the summer, visiting friends and more importantly, playing two great music festivals and my favorite NYC venue!

As you might remember, both I and Scott Wolfson and Other Heroes were both Emerging Artists at last year’s Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. The big news is that SWOH was selected as one of the three “Most Wanted” groups at this years’ fest, which means we get to play on the mainstage! Falcon Ridge runs August 4-7 up in Hillsdale, NY — come on up and root for us! We’ve also both got extensive schedules for jammin’ out at the late night campground scene. Can’t wait to see old friends.

On Tuesday, August 16, 10 pm, my band of friends and I hit Rockwood Music Hall’s ultimate listening room, Stage 3. It’s my only NYC appearance before I return in the winter and I hope you can make it. Rockwood 3 is located at 185 Orchard Street, and you can get tickets here: http://www.ticketfly.com/event/1249407-mya-byrne-new-york/

Then, that weekend (Aug 18-21), both the Wolfsons and I were selected as OFFICIAL ARTISTS at the legendary Philadelphia Folk Festival! I’m incredibly excited for both of us. The Wolfsons are playing Saturday morning, and I’m playing Sunday morning.

So that’s about it for now. In the interim, I should hopefully be doing some recording and enjoying the heck out of seeing my pals here in NYC. Stay tuned…

May gigs and June tour!

Hi everyone! Hope you are all enjoying a lovely spring. I have a few cool shows to tell you about!

First, I’ve joined a killer queercore punk band out here, The Homobiles, The Homobiles at SF Eagleled by ex-Tribe 8 frontperson Lynnee Breedlove. On Thurs, May 26, We’ve got our debut gig with me on bass at the SF Eagle, 398 12th Street, San Francisco, CA. Show starts at 8.

The following day, Friday, May 27, I play with my own full band atQueer Country West Coast -- Eli COnley, Mya Byrne, Annah Anti-Palindrome El Rio, a fantastic venue in the Mission, for Queer Country West, an offshoot of NYC’s Gay Ole Opry, along with pal Eli Conley and the incredible Annah Anti-Palindrome. 3158 Mission St, SF, CA. Doors 730. Free with the passcode: “MISS MAJOR”.

And then the next weekend, The Homobiles go on tour up the the Pacific Northwest! Yay! Homobiles Northwest Tour

Then, in July, I’ll be doing a very special acoustic show in SF that I can’t tell you about yet. (Shhhh!)

Then I’m back east for the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival with Scott Wolfson and Other Heroes!! We were voted “Most Wanted” along with some other friends and can’t wait to hit the mainstage!

Talk to ya soon…

Thanks for a great winter! Spring cometh…

I’ve really been enjoying California. I’m feeling strong about my new community, and this fall, I am so excited to be playing a great run of fall shows from the Northeast to Midwest to my new home in the Bay.

CBS/Radio.com, Falcon Ridge Folk Fest Mainstage, and Rockwood Stage 2!

Hey everyone! Whew! it’s been a bit of a whirlwind the last two months. Let’s start with the big stuff!! First of all, I moved to San Francisco in June (what?!) but some pretty big stuff brought me back to NYC for a few weeks.

This Friday, July 31, I will be showcased as an Emerging Artist on the mainstage of the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in upstate New York.  This is a HUGE honor, and one I’ve been crossing my fingers about for a long time. it’s a juried showcase, so if you’re at the fest, make sure you see me play (I’m on second!) and vote for me as “Most Wanted” so I get formally booked next year!!

Second, I am performing in NYC on Tuesday, August 11 at Rockwood Music Hall’s Stage Two. This is one of the best stages anywhere in the world, and I am so happy that my visit-home gig is on this stage with some of my best pals playing in the band — Chris Kelly, Scott Stein, and Scott Tofte. It’s a free show and it will ROCK. 196 Allen St (just south of Houston), FREE.

Last but certainly not least, I was recently featured on CBS/Radio.com by my dear friend Annie Reuter. She’s an incredible journalist and really represented my story in such a positive light. Thanks, again Annie…you folks can check out the article here: http://radio.com/2015/06/10/mya-byrne-trans-roots-singer-solo-debut-album-as-i-am/

So that’s about it for now. There will definitely be more stuff coming up, with 3 upcoming shows in the Bay Area Aug 19, 20, and 23, Scott Wolfson and Other Heroes at Philadelphia Folk Festival, and other fall festivities. Keep in touch and if you know anyone on the West Coast you think I should meet (or who might want to book me!), let me know! 🙂

Much love,
Mya
